 Carmita’s at the Rankin House is the new name for the restaurant opening in mid July. Michael and Carmita West, owners and operators, are making the move to downtown Tupelo from Carmita’s, The Café at Flowerdale on McCullough Boulevard and will open for lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plans are in the near future to also open for dinner. The Rankin House will also be available for rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, business meetings, and will cater for private functions on or off premises. A target date of July 16 has been set for the opening of Carmita’s at the Rankin House.
The entire House will accommodate 100 people for a sit down dinner or 250 for a cocktail situation. One of the rooms that will seat 40 has a large screen available for showing PowerPoint presentations. Business meetings work well in this room. Another room is called the Tea Room. Mothers can bring their young children, and the children have their own smaller table and chairs. Reservations are welcomed, but not required.
The Rankin House is located at 530 West Main Street. When you pass by and look at the parking spaces on the front – you decide there aren’t very many. Don’t fret. There are 50 additional parking spaces behind The Rankin House. Also, behind the house is an enclosed back yard for parties and receptions. It is most beautiful in the spring and the fall when the weather cooperates.
The Rankin House provides great food that is prepared with a Latin gusto. “Everything I do I try to prepare with an international flare that I acquired through my travels to the Mediterranean, Europe, Asia, and Africa, South America, and the great United States,” stated Carmita. She attributes her cooking abilities to her mother and her upbringing in Ecuador. Her mother taught her from the simple chores of sweeping the proper way and setting a table to preparing a dinner for ten or a fiesta for 300.
