Tupelo Recycling
December 1, 2004

The environment has a new champion in Tupelo. Tupelo Recycling, Tupelo's first industrial recycler, has opened its doors at 2490 Graham Drive. General Manager David Chandler hopes that their efforts will boost Mississippi's recycling rate and make this a more environmentally sound place to live.

"Mississippi has the lowest recycling rate of any state in the nation," Chandler said. "There are more and more raw goods coming into Tupelo every year, especially with the furniture industry, so if we can save companies 50% on their waste bill and be environmentally sensible, then I feel that we've been successful."

The parent group of Tupelo Recycling, The Trailor Group, saw a vast need for an industrial recycling program in Tupelo, because of the large amount of industry, namely that of furniture. Tupelo Recycling specializes in recyclable cardboard, office paper and plastics. From fan blades and furniture covers to cardboard boxes, shrink wrap and post-consumer clear soda bottles, Chandler says that 70% of what is put in a landfill may be recycled.

Tupelo Recycling is currently servicing 21 industries in the Tupelo/Lee County area and hopes to grow that number significantly in the near future. In order to be serviced, a waste audit is performed on the interested industry, where Tupelo Recycling's plant personnel will ascertain how to reduce their landfill cost and recover waste. Chandler believes it is the combined environmental and economic aspects of their service that sets them apart. There are future plans in the works for consumer recycling as well. These plans include bins for curbside recycling throughout the Tupelo area.

David Chandler and Tupelo Recycling are doing their part to make Tupelo and Mississippi a more beautiful place for all of us to live.

"When the landfill is full, what are you going to do?" asked Chandler.

Tupelo Recycling is answering this question one business at a time.
