Tupelo, Mississippi with its broad range of amenities, from its exceptional quality of life to its award-winning educational facilities to its being home to several Fortune 500 companies, has made its marks on the nation. Tupelo is also the only city in Mississippi to receive the All America City Award three times, so you'll find we are in good company.
The year was 1934. Tupelo made history as the first city in America to receive electricity from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Local electric bills decreased in the range of a half to two-thirds after the switch. Since 1934, residential rates have remained among the lowest in the nation. In 1994, of the 23 power companies across the South, Tupelo Water and Light Department ranked third with a cost of just $52.57 per 1000 kilowatt-hours.
Today, Tupelo is on the cutting edge of regional public power supply. The rate for a 1000 kilowatt-hour at the beginning of 1997 was $52.57. The dependence on this low-cost, reliable power continues to fuel new industrial growth, which creates more jobs and improves Tupelo's quality of life.
