FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (5)

Do I have to obtain a permit to build a fence?

Yes, to construct a fence inside municipal limits you must first obtain a permit. Please call the clerk for more information on obtaining a permit. Refer to Chapter 11.5 of the Official Zoning Ordinance for standards on fences and walls.

How do I determine setbacks for my property?

Setbacks are the minimum distance a building must be set back from the property lines of a lot. This and other site standards can be found in Appendix I of the Official Zoning Ordinance (Site Standards by Zoning District).

Can I operate my business from my home?

Home-based businesses are allowed by special exception in most of the residential zones. Refer to Appendix II of the Official Zoning Ordinance (Uses by Zoning District), to see if your zoning district allows for home business by special exception. All special exceptions must be approved by the Board of Aldermen; contact the clerk for an application.

I need help with a sign-related issue.

All signs, temporary or permanent, are subject to the regulations of the Official Zoning Ordinance. Permanent signs require a permit and must meet the standards outlined in Chapter 10.3.3.  Temporary signs must follow the standards set forth in Chapter 10.3.4. Contact the clerk for a sign permit application.

What is my property zoned and how does that affect my project?

To determine which zone your property is in, refer to the Official Zoning Map (linked above). Based on your zone, the Official Zoning Ordinance describes what is allowable, from how you may use your property to lot size, placement, and density. The purpose of zoning ordinances is to protect public health and safety, while promoting sustainable community development.
